venue for live music & sports
Inside a landmark 1860 building, with a kitchen and cellar that refuse to be ordinary. Tap any pillar to explore what makes each one tick.
HD Screens
From Sunday NFL to Monday Night Football, Thursday TNF, Saturday primetime, and everything in between — if it is on, it is on. The bar and dining room are set up so you never miss a play while you eat.
Craft Cocktails
The bar program balances the classics with a seasonal rotation that follows what is growing around Nevada City. Everything is made fresh — nothing pre-batched, nothing phoned in.
Wine Cellar
Nineteen consecutive years of Wine Spectator Awards of Excellence — a cellar built deep and wide, with California benchmarks, Old World classics, and a by-the-glass program that changes with the seasons.
Live Music
Live music Thursday, Friday, and Saturday — two acts on Friday and Saturday nights, with an early dinner set and a late set. The music wraps around your dinner, your game, your conversation. Never a cover.
Great Food
A kitchen that treats the classics with respect — generous portions, seasonal specials, and a menu that has evolved over fifty years without losing the thread. Steaks, pasta, burgers, and the dishes people come back for.
Music is the heartbeat
Since Greg Cook first opened the doors in 1973, music has filled this room. It's not a stage show — it's the soundtrack to your dinner, your conversation, your night out. The music wraps around everything else that's happening.

Signature
Onion Bread
$9House-baked onion bread, warm and aromatic.
A 1973 throwback — the bread that has been on the table since the doors opened. Warm, fragrant, and gone faster than you would expect.
Order it alongside any bowl of soup.
Fan Favorite
Chicken Wings (fresh)
$156 hand breaded and deep fried, franks hot sauce, bourbon BBQ sauce, or sweet chile sauce.
Never frozen. Six wings hand-breaded and deep-fried, then tossed in your choice of Frank's hot sauce, bourbon BBQ, or sweet chile. The kind you order again next time.
A pale ale or a bourbon neat.
Fan Favorite
Nottingham Nacho Fries
$16Pulled pork with pepperjack cheese sauce, diced tomatoes, green onions, pickled jalapeños.
A Sherwood staple. Hand-cut fries loaded with slow-smoked pulled pork, pepperjack cheese sauce, and a garden of toppings. Built to share — rarely shared.
An amber ale or a bourbon old fashioned.
Classic
The Outlaw French Onion Soup
$15Caramelized onions, beef stock, crostini, Gruyere cheese.
Onions caramelized low and slow, simmered in beef stock, topped with crostini and melted Gruyere. The bowl you order on a cold night.
A Côtes du Rhône or a malty brown ale.

Crab Cakes
$24Chilean crab, malt vinegar & dill aioli.
Chilean crab folded with minimal filler, pan-seared to a golden crust, and finished with malt vinegar and dill aioli.
A buttery Chardonnay or a Belgian white ale.

Baked Brie
$21Pastry dough, Melba sauce, crostini.
A wheel of brie wrapped in pastry dough and baked until gooey, served with Melba sauce and crostini. A rich, shareable opener.
A glass of off-dry Riesling or Prosecco.

Steamed Minella Clams
$26Garlic, white wine, lemon, butter, garlic bread.
Fresh Minella clams steamed open in a garlic-white-wine-and-butter broth. The garlic bread is there for a reason — use it.
The same white wine you cook with: a Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio.

Escargot
$19Garlic & herb compound butter, garlic bread.
Snails baked in garlic and herb compound butter, served with garlic bread to soak up every drop. A French-bistro classic, Sherwood-style.
A crisp Chablis or a glass of Champagne.

Shrimp Cocktail
$206 chilled shrimp, house made cocktail sauce.
Six cold, peeled shrimp fanned over ice with a house-made cocktail sauce that has a little horseradish kick.
A dry martini or a crisp Sauvignon Blanc.

Tempura Prawns
$204 large tempura prawns, malt vinegar & dill aioli.
Four large prawns in a light tempura batter, fried until crisp and served with malt vinegar and dill aioli for dipping.
A pilsner or a glass of Albariño.

The Merry Men's Sauteed Mushrooms

Plan Your EventThe Story
Greg Cook was 24 years old when he opened in 1973 — in a landmark 1860 brick building at the corner of Pine and Commercial, as one of Northern California's first wine bars.
The Paige family now carries the legacy forward. Same mahogany bar. Same brick walls. Same soul. The 2026 remodel is a rebirth, not a reinvention — music, food, and community first, with sports now added.

- 2019 The Paige family assumes ownership, honoring the legacy with upgrades to the bar and viewing experience.
