Our Story

Over Half a Century
of Nevada City

Greg Cook was 24 years old when he opened Friar Tuck's in 1973 in a 1860 brick building at the corner of Pine and Commercial, with star-shaped chandeliers, torch-burnt plywood tables, and a vision built on two things: wine and music.

Fifty years later, the bones are the same. The custom mahogany bar, handcrafted in Arcadia. The two wine cellars. The Sherwood Forest Room with its fiber-optic tree, built by local artists after a 2002 fire gutted the building and the whole community showed up to help rebuild it.

1973

Friar Tuck's opens at Pine & Commercial. One of the first wine bars in Northern California.

1982

Greg and Rona Cook double the restaurant, add full liquor license and an expanded menu.

2002

A devastating fire. 100 firefighters. 25 agencies. The community responds with "Hearts and Hands of Nevada City."

2003

Rebuilt from the ashes the mahogany bar, the Sherwood Forest Room, and the brick walls return.

2019

The Paige family assumes ownership, continuing the legacy with the same heart.

2023

50 years. A week of celebration, two musicians every night, and a street party the town didn't forget.

While we welcome walk-ins whenever space allows, reservations are strongly encouraged especially on weekends and special event nights. You can reserve online via OpenTable or by submitting a request through our contact form.
