About This Program

A vintage automobile navigating the narrow canyon road — one of the corridors that connected remote Sierra communities
A vintage automobile navigating the narrow canyon road — one of the corridors that connected remote Sierra communities

Long before Nevada County became the community we know today, the South Yuba Canyon served as a vital route for settlers, travelers, merchants, and miners moving through the Sierra.

These early pioneers helped establish transportation corridors, connect remote communities, and support the economic growth that followed the California Gold Rush and the rise of the Comstock Lode. Their efforts shaped not only the landscape of the canyon itself, but the future development of Nevada County.

Join retired State Park Ranger Chuck Scimeca for an evening exploring the people, routes, and historical events that transformed the South Yuba Canyon into one of the region's most important pathways for commerce, migration, and opportunity.

Through stories of settlement, transportation, and local history, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how the South Yuba helped shape the county we know today.
