Outdoor Activities Near Nevada City in Spring

Spring in Nevada City means wildflowers, mild weather, and great outdoor activities. Here is what to do outside in the Sierra foothills this season.

By Friar Tucks

Spring is one of the best times to be in Nevada City. The hills turn green. The wildflowers bloom. The rivers run full. And the weather is warm without being hot. It is the perfect season for getting outside and enjoying the natural beauty of the Sierra foothills.

Here are some of the best outdoor activities near Nevada City in the spring.

Wildflower Hikes

The Buttermilk Bend Trail explodes with wildflowers from March through mid May. Lupine, poppies, and dozens of other species line the path. The colors are vivid and the views of the South Yuba River below are stunning.

You do not need to be a botanist to appreciate the display. Just walk slowly, look around, and enjoy the show. Bring a camera. You will want to remember this.

Other trails in the area also bloom in the spring. The Independence Trail and the Empire Mine grounds are both beautiful this time of year.

River Adventures

Spring is when the rivers are at their fullest. The South Yuba River is perfect for a riverside walk or a picnic on the rocks. Swimming is best in late spring when the water warms up a bit.

If you are adventurous, consider a rafting trip on the South Fork of the American River. Several outfitters offer half day and full day trips. It is a thrilling way to experience the power of spring snowmelt.

Even just sitting by the river and listening to the water is a wonderful spring activity. It is calming and free.

Gardening and Farm Visits

Spring is planting season in Nevada County. Local farms open their doors for tours and visits. You can see what is being planted, learn about sustainable farming, and buy fresh starts for your own garden.

The farmers market kicks off in spring with the first harvests of the season. Greens, herbs, and early vegetables arrive on the stands. It is a great time to cook with what is fresh and local.

If you love gardens, visit the grounds of Empire Mine State Historic Park. The gardens are maintained by volunteers and are especially beautiful in the spring.

Birding and Wildlife

Spring brings birds back to the foothills. If you are a birder, the trails near Nevada City are excellent. You might spot hawks, woodpeckers, bluebirds, and dozens of songbird species.

The South Yuba River corridor is a particularly good area for birding. The mix of water, trees, and open space attracts a wide variety of species.

Even if you are not a dedicated birder, you will notice the wildlife in the spring. The forests are alive with sound and movement.

Evening Activities

Spring evenings in Nevada City are mild and pleasant. Outdoor dining is comfortable. Patios fill up. The light lasts longer. It is a beautiful time to eat dinner outside.

Friar Tucks opens its outdoor patio when the weather allows. It is a lovely spot for dinner and live music on a spring evening. The fresh air and the sound of the music make for a perfect combination.
