Nevada City is a great home base for exploring the Sierra foothills and beyond. Within an hour, you can reach rivers, lakes, mountain passes, wine country, and historic towns. Each direction offers something different.

Here are some of the best day trips from Nevada City that you can do in a single day.

Grass Valley and the Foothills Wineries

Grass Valley is just four miles away and always worth a visit. Combine it with a tour of the local wineries. Naggiar Vineyards, Sierra Starr, and Lucchesi are all within a short drive. A tasting tour through the Sierra Foothills makes for a perfect afternoon.

Downtown Grass Valley has its own historic charm. The Holbrooke Hotel, the shops on Mill Street, and the local eateries are all worth exploring.

You can easily spend a full day between Grass Valley and the surrounding wineries without ever getting bored.

Auburn and the American River

Auburn is about 30 minutes south of Nevada City. It sits at the confluence of two forks of the American River. The Old Town district has restaurants, shops, and a nice feel.

For outdoor lovers, the Auburn State Recreation Area offers miles of trails, river access, and stunning canyon views. You can hike, swim, or just take in the scenery.

Auburn also has a growing food scene. It is a solid lunch stop on your way back to Nevada City.

Downieville and the Yuba River

If you head north on Highway 49, you will reach Downieville in about an hour. This tiny mountain town sits at the junction of two rivers. It is a favorite for mountain bikers, hikers, and anyone who loves remote, beautiful places.

The drive alone is worth the trip. The highway follows the river through narrow canyons and dense forest. Every turn reveals a new view.

Downieville is small and quiet. That is the point. It is the kind of place where time slows down completely.

Truckee and Donner Lake

Truckee is about an hour east of Nevada City. It is a mountain town with a vibrant downtown, great restaurants, and access to some of the best outdoor recreation in California.

Donner Lake is a short drive from downtown Truckee. In the summer, it is perfect for swimming, kayaking, and picnicking. The water is clear and the mountains surround you on all sides.

Truckee has a different energy from Nevada City. It is bigger and more touristy. But it has its own charm and is well worth a day trip.

Tips for Day Tripping

Start early to make the most of your day. Bring water, snacks, and a jacket. Mountain weather can change quickly, even in the summer.

Check road conditions before you go, especially in the winter months. Some routes can close or require chains after a storm.

Plan your return to Nevada City in time for dinner. There is no better way to end a day trip than with a meal at one of the local restaurants.

Close Your Day at Friar Tucks

After your day out, make your way to Friar Tucks for dinner and live music. The seasonal menu celebrates the same local ingredients you see at the farmers market and in the foothills. Reserve your table and enjoy.
