Why Friar Tucks Is More Than Just a Night Out in Nevada City

Friar Tucks in Nevada City offers seasonal dining, live music, and over 50 years of history. Discover what makes this restaurant a local landmark.

By Friar Tucks

Some restaurants serve great food. Some bars have good drinks. A few places have decent live music. But it is rare to find a spot that does all three well in one room, on the same night, with over 50 years of history behind it.

That is what you get at Friar Tucks in downtown Nevada City. It is one of the oldest family owned restaurants in California. And it has been a cornerstone of the dining and music scene here since 1973.

A History Worth Knowing

Friar Tucks was founded by Greg Cook in the winter of 1973. It started as one of the first wine bars in Northern California. The Wine Spectator Award of Excellence came 19 years in a row. Live music has been part of the experience every single day since the beginning.

The building sits at the corner of Pine and Commercial Streets. The original structure dates back to 1860. In 2002, a fire destroyed almost everything. It took 100 firefighters and 17 hours to put it out. But the restaurant was rebuilt in just 14 months.

In 2019, the Paige family took over ownership. They carry on the traditions that made Friar Tucks a landmark.

The Food

The menu changes with the seasons. The kitchen works with local farmers and producers. Ingredients are fresh, non-GMO, and free from synthetic chemicals. What you eat here comes from the region.

The dinner menu features steak, seafood, fondue, and seasonal specials. The bistro menu offers burgers, tacos, and wings for a more casual experience. The desserts and after dinner drinks menu rounds out the evening.

Dinner service runs Sunday through Thursday from 5 PM to 8 PM. Friday and Saturday from 5 PM to 9 PM. Bar service starts at 4 PM daily.

The Music

Live music is not an add on at Friar Tucks. It is part of the foundation. You can hear talented local musicians every night. The stage sits in the Bar Lounge. The sound fills the room without overpowering your conversation.

The genres range from acoustic folk to jazz to rock. The variety keeps things fresh. Check the live music calendar to see who is playing.

If you are looking for dinner and live music in Nevada City, Friar Tucks is the answer.

The Spaces

The restaurant has three distinct rooms. The Tree Room is intimate and romantic. The Bar Lounge is the social heart of the place. The Outdoor Patio opens in warm weather for dining under the sky.

Each space has its own personality. You can start with drinks at the bar, move to the Tree Room for dinner, and return to the lounge for music. The flow is natural and the evening unfolds at its own pace.

What Sets It Apart

There are good restaurants in Nevada City. But few combine food, music, history, and community the way Friar Tucks does. The Paige family cares about the people who walk through the door. That shows in every detail.

This is not a place that chases trends. It is a place that has been doing the same thing well for over 50 years. That consistency is rare. And it is why people keep coming back.

Reserve Your Table

If you have not been to Friar Tucks yet, now is the time. Reserve your table and plan an evening that brings together great food, live music, and real history. It is the kind of night out that Nevada City was made for.
